My personal training experience with Paul:
After an extensive search over the past few years to find a local
dog trainer to do private sessions, I have finally come across an
experienced dog trainer and handler, specifically in the Novato and
San Rafael area. It is with great confidence that I recommend Paul
Miller. Paul is the first trainer I've come across to offer an
entire training package, including equipment, nutritional counseling
and everything you wanted to know about dog training and
understanding your dog's behavior.
I own several large and quite powerful German Shepherd dogs and it
has always been my goal to have solid obedience on each (off leash
and on) and polite manners when meeting/greeting or just passing by
other dogs.
Because training is my passion, I have dedicated the past 3 years to
studying under and training with dozens of dog trainers located all
over the Bay Area. While many have been top notch, it has been my
long term goal to find a local Marin based trainer, one that is
skilled in areas such as understanding behavior, being able to read
body language in the owner and in the dog, working with leash
reactivity issues, knowing obedience training, as well as having a
background in K9 handling.
I am big on praise and prefer to train using traditional (pain free)
methods. Understanding leadership and management is what are key, as
well as learning how to read and understand body language.
Upon meeting my dog for the first time, Paul was able to establish
the root cause of his issues, provide an explanation as to why the
problems likely exist and then provide a training program and better
handling approach suited specifically to me and my dog.
The type of training Paul offers isn’t typically taught at local
shelter group classes which I do recommend for safe socializing,
breed exposure and fun exercises. These classes do help us get off
to a good start but they don’t necessarily put us into ‘real
life’ situations which are what we all encounter each day. When
everything is safe, predictable and routine in the classroom, our
dogs tend to act very differently such as when out on a neighborhood
walk where territorial issues become a big challenge.
Finding Paul has been a true blessing as I have dogs that tend to be
reactive around other dogs, often exhibiting leash aggression. To
work on this behavioral challenge, Paul often brings dogs with him
to our training sessions to help teach proper greeting methods and
to send calming signals to my dogs.
My long term goal is to be able to take my dogs anywhere that trails
exist (regardless of loose or leashed dogs) and have no worries of
what might happen during a dog encounter. My dogs have been bitten
by ‘friendly’ off leash dogs running up so my confidence levels
have been shot down and even in my own neighborhood, I always feel
like I’m on the defense.
Paul also does dog walking, dog training without the client and
works with any breed, any behavior, any age, and any level of
training you desire. He’s a calming influence to be around and has
taught me how I can effectively correct inappropriate behavior just
using my body language or proper tone.
Having worked with many excellent Bay Area trainers, I can’t say
enough good things about Paul. It was my lucky day when I met this
new local trainer at the 2006 Bay Area Pet Fair and learned that I
no longer had to make 80-100 mile round trips to train with experts
that understand Shepherd issues! I found my own LOCAL ONE!!
I consider Paul a very ‘realistic’ and ‘honest’ Whisperer
type that believes if you’re committed, consistent and patient,
you can yield results. The key word is that he won’t lead you to
believe that a problem can be fixed in one or two sessions. Training
and behavior modification is a long process requiring a steady
commitment. Paul stresses that you must be willing to put in the
time and do the daily training exercises he prescribes. Paul is a
‘real life’ trainer and not a TV show where problems appear to
be magically resolved in just minutes! He has however been involved
with Natural Horse training and has experience no one I have found
has..
Paul is always helpful, dedicated and extremely honest. There are
too many trainers with a ‘one size fits all’ approach to
training but Paul’s approach is very different. He understands
that successful training is done by first examining the specific
breed and age specific behavior along with the dog’s specific
temperament issues, and then molding a program specific to the dog
and its owner.
Finding Paul was a long journey as I had been searching for a
trainer like him for several years. With Paul there are no dog and
pony tricks or bells and whistles, but rather a realistic and
comprehensive type of ‘no pain’ training technique that yields
results.
It is such a pleasure to be able to refer people to Paul as a local
Novato based dog trainer offering privates and semi-private lessons.
